The Sardar Sarovar Dam is world's 2nd largest dam in terms of volume of concrete used, having longest canal network in the world, with largest water carrying capacity of 40000 cusec, much more than volume of water flowing in most rivers in Gujarat.

The dam was built with latest engineering technology using the world's 2nd largest cable crane in terms of the span fascinating tourist from all over the world.

Best time

Round the year especially when the dam overflows in the monsoon.


River Narmada having traveled 1200 km after originating from Amarkantak is trapped by this dam between the oldest Mountain Ranges of Vindhyachal on North and Satpuda Mountain on South creating huge Sardar Sarovar Reservoir of 235 sq km that magnetize visitors.

During the foundation laying ceremony of this dam Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, the then prime minister of India rightly stated that 'This place is Kashmir of Gujarat'.

Standing tall amongst the dense forest and mountains, having achieved height of 121.92 meters leaves visitors spellbound and mesmerized. Being lifeline of Gujarat this dam serves primary purpose of irrigation and drinking water to the remotest corners stretched up to Rajasthan, has the hydroelectricity generation capacity of 1450 Mega Watts.

Tips

Visitor Pass will be available from the PRO office, Kevadia for the tourist.

Dam is the greatest attraction for tourist and engineers around the world. The ambient view points, garden and boating amenities provide lifetime memories to the tourist. Godbole Gates, Narmada Main Canal Head regulator and beautiful dykes breeding thousands of crocodiles are great attraction for tourists.
